History

Chandigarh was born out of the country's partition in 1947 when it lost Lahore, the erstwhile capital of composite Punjab. To fill up this vacuum, Chandigarh was selected to be the capital. It is the first planned city of India. The responsibility for the design was given to the French architect Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and along with a number of Indian architects Chandigarh, the present capital, came into existence at the foothills of the Shivaliks. It was built in 1953 and  serves as the capital of two states, i.e. Punjab and Haryana but is administered by the Central Government and is hence classified as an Union Territory.
