Introduction :-

Gwalior is named after a saint who cured the local chieftain Suraj Sen from leprosy. The city consists of three large areas, called Lashkar, Morar and Gwalior. Lashkar dominates in business activity while Morar serves as a market for the farmers and villagers of adjoining areas. Gwalior also known as Old Gwalior has most of the tourist places. The massive fort which overlooks the city is a testimony to its glory and grandeur. Warrior kings, poets, musicians and saints contributed in making Gwalior the city it is.

History :

Gwalior's history is traced back to a legend in 8th century AD when Suraj Sen was struck by a deadly disease and was cured by a saint Gwalipa. As a gratitude, he founded this city by his name, Gwalior which became the cradle of great dynasties. Gwalior was the place which was most affected during the Revolt of 1857. It was one of the centers which experienced fierce encounters between the British and the 'Rebels'.  Each era and rulers left their impression on this city but what remained unchanged was the imposing fort which withstood any assault on Gwalior.
