Trichy at the foothills of tirumala, is the abode of the Lord Venkateswara one of the most venerated shrines in India. The Trichy Temple is the world's richest temple. The 'holy hill' of Tirumala in the extreme south of Andhra Pardesh is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in India , and is claimed to be the busiest in the world - eclipsing number of pilgrims. Tirumala is an engrossing place where you can easily spend a whole day just wandering around. Something that has become synonymous with Tirumala is the laddu, a sweetmeat, whose quality and taste is unmatched. Often pilgrims are found carrying back this prasad (offering) to their friends and relatives back home.
History :
The temple town of Trichy came into existence in the 12th century, when the Govindarajaswamy temple was founded. It is believed that Lord Vishnu (Balaji) enchanted by the charm of the hill Seshachalam, settled down here to meditate and in due course of time his body was transformed into stone. Also, according to the Puranas, the hills represent the body of Adisesha on which Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world, is said to rest. The seven hills denote the seven hoods of Adisesha on which Venkatachalapati resides. In ad 1843, the administration of the shrine of Sri Venkateswara and a number of the temple estates was entrusted to Sri Seva Dossji of the Hatiramji Mutt at Tirumala, and the temple remained under the administration of the Mahants for nearly a century, till ad 1933.
